I feel very lucky.
Well, actually we all are. It doesn’t really matter if the kids are sick or it is raining today. We live in the land of milk and honey. A land of opportunity. Tremendous opportunity.
I digress.
I feel I am very lucky....I have been fortunate enough to be in the right place, at the right time, on more than one occasion.
I was lucky enough to be fired about a dozen years into my career. It did not seem lucky at the time. It is nerve wracking, and just a bit thrilling, but it was a wonderful chance to stop mid-career and think, ‘now, what was it I want to be when I finally grow up?’
I had an opportunity to do some exercises and psychological tests and write a short autobiography of my life to that point. A chance to really get to know myself. To work on my "so, tell me a bit about yourself" story, and to practice in front of an audience, and a camera. Now, that is nerve wracking! But, I had a chance to polish it before I told it in front of an audience that mattered.
I realized in the process of all this that, like so many of the really important things in life, they don’t teach this stuff in school. Another one of those lessons from the school of hard knocks.
I do not wish unemployment on any one. It can be a great opportunity, but there is a cost.
For this reason, I put together a work book, with which someone can better prepare their "so, tell me a bit about yourself" story in their spare time. Or at least build the foundation. Then, when you need it, it is ready to go.
